XPLUS Compass

XPLUS Compass

This framework supports individuals in developing ten essential architectural competencies—the balance of knowledge, skills, and mindset required to create real impact.

For individuals, it offers clarity on where they stand today and where to focus next. For organizations, it provides visibility into a team's capabilities and potential, along with the insight needed to prepare for the future. The result is stronger performance, clearer expectations, higher motivation, and a shared definition of what good looks like.

Core competencies of a modern architect

Through years of hands-on experience, research, and iteration, we identified ten key competencies that define an effective architecture practice. Ten proved to be the ideal number: focused enough to be practical, yet comprehensive enough to guide meaningful development. These competencies are grouped into four clusters that reflect how architects think, work, collaborate, and connect to business reality.

Core
Horizon, scope, architectural practice
Your lens, your reach, your craft. These competencies define the architect’s role and shape the value they bring.

How
Analysis & judgment, decisiveness, work management
Architecture needs momentum. Architects learn to assess a situation, make sound decisions, and follow through with the discipline needed to make progress real.

Interactions with others
Effective contributions, stakeholder concerns
Architecture is never a solo practice. Architects influence decisions, align stakeholders, and foster collaboration by acting as trusted partners rather than isolated experts.

Engagement
Company empathy, adaptability
To stay relevant, architects stay connected—to strategy, culture, people, and the evolving business ecosystem. Their work must remain purposeful, aligned, and grounded in reality.

All XPLUS Academy training programs build from these core competencies. We tailor learning paths to different architect profiles and maturity stages, because architecture is not a one-size-fits-all discipline. Some programs deepen domain expertise; others strengthen the broader architectural mindset. All are designed with one goal in mind: helping architects perform with confidence and make architecture work in practice.
